ADHD assessment

We understand that coming for an assessment for ADHD can be a daunting step. There is so much information (and mis-information) on the internet, and we feel it is very important to be open and informative about what is involved.

Our ethos, from a professional and clinical perspective, is that it is important to meet a patient (and their family) in person. So much is gained from this face to face interaction, which allows for a thorough assessment. We therefore always conduct ADHD assessments in person at our clinic.

As well as the interview with the Doctor we use Connor’s 4 assessments which are completed in advance of appointment, and these are interpreted as part of the consultation with the Doctor. We also have the ability to use QbCheck if the Doctor feels it is necessary.

We do need at least one parent (or person with parental responsibility) to attend, although both parents are very welcome to do so. As part of the assessment, the Doctor will ask questions about the pregnancy. the child’s birth, first separation from parents and early milestones.

Booking process

In the first instance, we ask that you submit your details via the form in our contact section. Please ensure you include a telephone number so that we can call you to chat over the process and answer any questions you may have. We will also offer you an appointment at as mutually convenient a time as possible. Once the appointment is offered, we will supply our payment details and ask that the payment is made within an agreed timescale. This is usually within 5 days, and the appointment is confirmed once the payment lands. We will also at this point, set up and email the links to the Connor’s Assessment forms.

The day of the assessment

When you arrive at Bloxham Mill, please park anywhere in the car park and come in and let reception know you are have arrived. One of the friendly reception staff will come look after you and bring you through to the clinic, where we will be waiting to welcome you and help you to feel settled.

The assessment begins with everyone (child and parent(s)) in the consulting room with the Doctor, who will try to put everyone at their ease as she conducts the assessment in the form of a conversation. The Doctor may wish to speak to the young person on their own, in which case the parents will be invited to sit in our adjoining waiting area, where one of the team will be on hand to answer any questions and provide more tea or coffee. At the end of the consultation, everyone will be brought back together and the Doctor will share any diagnosis and agree next steps.

We realise that medication is an individual choice for every family. We feel it it important to let patients know that as a medical practice we are able to offer this when appropriate. If medication is offered / prescribed, we have information leaflets on all medications available in the UK. If you wish to begin a trial of medication, we will explain the follow process (which can also be found in our ‘ongoing treatment’ section) and you are able to leave with a private prescription in your hand. Should you wish to go home and consider this decision first, we are more than happy to support you in you with this.

What can our reports be used for?

As a medical practice, our role is to offer private assessments and access to medication privately, from our clinic, in a timely fashion. An assessment in the private sector is not intended for expediting treatment within the NHS, and as such all of our reports do state this clearly.

The Conners, and Qb scores if performed, will appear in your assessment report and may be used by school examinations officers to request adjustments such as movement breaks. You can request a redacted version of your assessment report to share with school if you prefer.
